WTF? / Part 4 / 4.6
What is a trade reference?

Trade reference

THE 30-SECOND ANSWER

A trade reference is a supplier who will confirm how you have paid them: how long the account has been open, the limit, and your payment record.

In plain English

Credit applications ask for two or three. The new supplier calls or emails them before setting your limit.

The quality of the reference matters more than the number: an 18-month account with real volume beats three accounts opened last month.

Example

A supplier confirms a $12,000 high credit, Net 30 terms, and no late payments in 14 months.

Why it matters

It is the cheapest form of credibility a young business can build.

COMMON MISTAKEListing a supplier you have paid late, or one who barely knows you.
