WTF? / Part 5 / 5.10
What is scratch-and-dent inventory?

Scratch and dent

THE 30-SECOND ANSWER

Scratch-and-dent goods are new or nearly new items with cosmetic damage that does not affect function, sold at a discount.

In plain English

Cosmetic damage is the whole business model: the unit works, the finish does not sell at full price, and the discount is the margin.

Grading matters. Be consistent about what counts as light, moderate or heavy damage, and photograph every unit the same way.

Example

A dented-side refrigerator with a full warranty retails 35% below new and sells in a week.

Why it matters

Consistent grading is what lets you price quickly and handle returns without arguments.

COMMON MISTAKEMixing functional faults into a cosmetic grade. That is how a reputation gets damaged.
